The university semester has ended and twenty-year old Sarith Kurita expects nothing more other than a mediocre winter break with his dead-beat dad. Simultaneously, nineteen-year old Cassandra Ashford is also done with school and anticipates her father giving her a higher responsibility in his company to test her worth. But when unforeseen events disrupt their daily routines, both of them find themselves drawn into a volatile world filled with dangerous secrets and where hostile opportunists with clandestine agendas of their own are on the move. Furthermore, a notorious death-row prisoner, thirty-five year-old Axel Lamperouge, escapes a high-security prison and is pulled into the maelstrom. Within the intertwining strings of events, navigating their way through becomes a daunting measure with the consequences being more than they can handle no matter where they turn.

Perilous Overtures edition by Harrison Nguyen Literature Fiction eBooks

Perilous Overtures is a sci-fi thriller crowded with familiar SF concepts, including mad scientists, reanimation drugs, failure of the earth to sustain its population, environmental exploitation both here and off-world, genetic modification of humans including designing a super soldier, cloning, organ harvesting on the black market, use of orphans and prisoners to grow new genetic material, as well as people with extraordinary powers, including telekinesis, mind manipulation, and magnetic control.

On the domestic front, it features a dead-beat, drunk, drug-dealer dad and a father who is really a clone of the original father, a mother with a secret past, and a lot of young adults in a constant battle to survive shoot-outs with thugs, ex-cons, and agents of the rich and powerful.

The problem is the reader is not emotionally invested in these battles. The most interesting character is Sarith, who is also the only one to grow in the course of the story. Unfortunately, the book ends abruptly with Sarith being given some drug that renders him unconscious.

The writer seems to be unfamiliar with idiomatic expressions in American English. A good editor might help.

Perilous Overtures edition by Harrison Nguyen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Perilous Overtures written by Harrison Nguyen is a book that has stirring characters who have snags and goals and it does indeed lead to penalties and cost Sarith, Cassandra and Axel some consequences. But ...well I won't tell you any more about the story because it might ruin it for you, but I will say that this is a good storyline and one I say is a must to read. I recommend it.

Perilous Overtures is an exciting adventure - one of those 'confluence of events' books where seemingly disparate story-lines merge to create an unexpected conflict.

Sarith Kurita, Cassandra Ashford and Axel Lamperouge are compelling characters who all have seperate issues and goals which lead to unexpected consequences. Over the course of the book their core beliefs and their perception of reality undergo a complete transformation. From the heights of Cassandra Ashford's father's corporation to the depths of Axel Lamperoughe's prison cell - from hostiles out of the pastbent on Sarith's destruction to psychic visions of the future, Perilous Overtures has it all.

While this was not my usual 'cup of tea' I found myself drawn into the fantasy / sci-fi world that writer Harrison Nguyen has created.
Perilous Overtures could easily turn into a series which I look forward to reading.
Combine wealthy, corrupt businesses with domestic terrorism, add gripping romances, revenge and throw in a little supernatural power, and you have 'Perilous Overtures'. The story quickly pulls the reader into the lives of the several diverse characters, some of whom are good, some bad, but none indifferent. The story proceeds through a series of very complex situations for many of the characters, bringing the reader to edge-of-the-seat suspense.
Mr. Nguyen has done an excellent job of creating a web of situations that all entrap his varied characters. This book is highly recommended.
Perilous overtures is the story of Sarith, Cassandra and Axel who lead distinct lives yet their motives and certain situations make their paths collide with each other and lead them into perilous waters fraught with enemies having psionic abilities. Will they survive it? Well you just need to read more to find out.
Its easy to envision the scenarios within the story as the details are well described and the twists and turns do keep you intrigued. However, its a little heavy in parts with too much information which sometimes seems to drag down the reader.

But all in all an interesting read! Recommended!
A captivating page-turner from start to finish; this story peaked my interest early with the chase scene. From there it only grew as Sarith, stumbled into a world he knew nothing about. I enjoyed the mix of science fiction and drama. The characters are well developed. They have flaws that make them relatable. I appreciate the way the sci-fi information was given in interesting and enjoyable doses. As someone who doesn’t read a lot of sci-fi books, I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend it to others.
I just finished reading Harrison Nguyen's sci-fi fantasy about a clever high school tutor who finds out about life in another dimension. The story begins with a bang as Sarith Kurita's being chased by an angry mob of students that he's deceived. (I liked the fact that the main character takes time to reflect on and justify some of his ethical behavior.) For this genre, it's a bit different. There are a number of fast paced chase and action scenes in the story that intrigued me. They are well written and fun. The characters are developed in an interesting manner and the events are clearly described. The only reason I'm not giving this novel five stars is due to some awkward terminology. With a good editor, those problems can be eliminated. The story itself and his detailed descriptions of various areas of Houston and Dallas, Texas were well-done. Very interesting read!
The book begins with 'Sarith Kurita- Faculty Tutor running through a ghetto neighborhood pursued by an angry mob. Enter Ms. Cassandra Ashford, a fascinating character from the very beginning. Why was Sarith being pursued? What had he done? We find out that it's not what we expect in this wonderful novel of strange twists and turns. The characters are new and invigorating. Who are Dr. Donovan and Mick Carson? We find out that we are in a future time where space travel is a daily event and asteroid mining is a complex business. Things on Earth are not going well! Cassandra's father Bismarck Ashford may be involved. A character named Axel joins Sarith-Cassandra, and the plot thickens. I loved the strangeness and newness of the characters and the world that the writer builds for us. We have a new voice here, a writer who's not afraid to create new ground and push things to an edge. Three cheers, two thumbs up and five stars! (Review by author PanOrpheus, pen name of Howard Lipman--author of the Delphic Oracle and Tesla's Tower series)
