People who follow Meyerhofer's writing have come to expect it to be authentic, insightful and urbane. They may not have previously expected blue aliens - but happily, some things translate, and this romp of a book is him at his best. This is a love story - on its face, a sexy, irreverent, unbelievably bizarre love story about a blue alien with Asian features and the ability to teleport who falls in love with a Jewish therapist in Battery Park City. Look past the alien skin and it's a very human story; Meyerhofer writes sensitively and lovingly about some of the best and hardest things about human experience, from the fallibility of our heroes (and therapists) to the pains and joys of family life. It's laugh-out-loud funny (the book is worth buying for the first few pages alone), smart, and intensely enjoyable.
While this obviously isn't a book that takes itself too seriously, there's a lot to treasure in its ideas. Everyone struggles, people who are otherwise completely foreign to each other have more in common than not, and there's hope of a full, loving life even for the grumpiest and most self-critical of us. In short, this was better than a book about a gay blue alien had any right to be. Buy it.
If the idea of a gay psychotherapist/blue alien romance novel sounds interesting to you even in the slightest, then I'd strongly recommend giving Bad Therapist a read. It's sweet, funny, relatable, sexy and of course shamelessly romantic. Not only an enjoyable sf/romance romp but also an intriguing insight into the life of a therapist. Loved it from start to finish.
This was a delight to read; thoughtful, insightful, with a bit of raunchy thrown in for good measure. If you are looking for a serious, dramatic read then you may want to skip it, however if you like books that are lighthearted, funny, and which break the fourth wall, then it's definitely worth your time. The main character is as much narrator as protagonist, and something of a self-portrait of the author. The blue alien on the cover is endearing and easy to warm up to (if a little timid at first).
What I most enjoyed about Bad Therapist were the semi-philosophical monologues, where the main character talks about the nature of humans and humanity, how our minds work and the kinds of behavior that help or hinder personal growth - but as I've always been interested in philosophy, I might be somewhat biased in this regard.
Overall I found it quite enjoyable, with several laugh-out-loud moments and a not-too-fast, not-too-slow pace. The subject matter and writing style may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I guarantee that if you give it a chance you'll come away from it with a smile.
Postmodern life is alienating. It alienates us from one another and, to the extent that our relations with others define us, from ourselves. Because we see ourselves as individuals in search of individuated meaning, we often seek personal fulfillment beyond family or community. Accordingly, we tend to wander, making us a nation of strangers. Paradoxically, when we don't know our neighbors, our fear of difference grows even as we seek to differ from another to be more authentic selves. Fear discourages community. Fear thwarts love.
Bad Therapist, Will Meyerhofer's first novel, meditates upon such issues of identity and love through a postmodern blending of reality, fiction, and science fiction. The result is a fanboy-fun, fantastical romance affording reflections upon who we are, who we love, and how we love. In it, Will Meyerhofer, a Manhattan psychotherapist, finds himself the social science subject and love interest of Sherwin, an alien from a highly-developed planet light years from Earth. Sherwin readily admits his love for Will, whose professional ethics forbid reciprocation. As a "bad therapist", Will romances and falls in love with Sherwin (all the probing is consensual), who, despite being an alien, suffers the same estrangement from his parents and his people so many humans suffer. He's an alienated alien. Will's entanglement with Sherwin occasions extended discourses upon cultural, sexual, and political identities and how they define romance. As part of this exploration, Meyerhofer discusses the practice of psychotherapy, which, for him, promotes self-knowledge (and therefore inner peace) by confronting truths about oneself one either hasn't acknowledged or doesn't want to.
This work is, as Meyerhofer describes it, "sui generis". As such, it melds form and function quite effectively. Fundamentally, it's about transgressing boundaries for love and loving doing it Will violates his ethics to love Sherwin; Sherwin's race can change sexes at will, allowing mothers to be fathers and fathers mothers; Sherwin bears Will's child after switching sexes to conceive it; and, Sherwin discloses his existence to Barack Obama, our boundary-defying president. Meyerhofer also breaches boundaries between fiction and nonfiction. The book, while a work of fiction, unapologetically incorporates Meyerhofer himself as the main character in a fantastic counterfactual reality (see Kelly Roman's The Art of War for a similarly successful author's use of himself as a main character). Indeed, one chapter features an editorial defense/explication of Meyerhofer's unorthodox approach. All pretenses to fiction disappear (or do they?).
As I noted before, postmodernity has brought alienation and self-definition aggravating that alienation. Transgressing boundaries and exploding stereotypes are useful and often necessary paths to defining oneself, but they can render us loveless and afraid. Navigating between fiercely-cultivated personal authenticity and surrender to another is our lot. Bad Therapist provides fun and affirmative witness about how do to so.
What a fine piece of literary indulgence this is! Bless Will Meyerhofer for not taking himself too seriously, and in turn making us all feel a little less alone in our bizarre thoughts and indulgences. This book is a comical delight, while at the same time an endearing look at the ubiquitous nature of love and our desire to be accepted.
