For readers who like the books of John Sanford, Lee Child, James Patterson and others writers of murder mysteries, this series will be a good find for them.
Lohr creates characters who are real people, with good and bad characteristics. You won't find the ever-powerful, unrealistic hero or heroine, just characters whom you may encounter living day to day.
In this book, Lohr takes the reader into the complex issues of the "drug war", and illegals in Southern Arizona. The reader learns life there in the hot, desolate dessert is not lived in terms of black and white/ right vs wrong, but rather in the complexities of varying shades of grey, tinted in the red of blood, and the green of money.
It's a good murder mystery that will make the reader think.
I must confess though, I missed Gray-Boy the cat. I hope he makes a return. A bad cat will always make a person fallible.

"Here in the western desert, death wraps its shadow in the sun and appears, to the unwary, as just another nice day." Clark Lohr's writing has elements of James Lee Burke's, and as poetic and challenging as Mr. Burke's crime novels. In this book, Manny Aquilar is once again fighting for justice, this time in the murders of two women from the rez.

Manny's still a PI, his girlfriend, Reina, (who gets all the best lines), and of course there's the system, legal and otherwise, that Manny will either go over, around, or just stomp on--whichever will work for him to get the job done. It's a mystery of course, and well written is an understatement. It's also a thoughtful and literary read, with humor and pathos at times interchangeable, but always very satisfying.
“We have seen the enemy and he is us,” said Walt Kelly’s satirically political cartoon character Pogo, which brings to mind that any time the government gets involved in a situation there is bound to be a SNAFU.

Private eye Manny Aquilar follows several dead-end leads in an attempt to discover who murdered Lois Donahue, the wife of a Tohono O’Odham Indian, Donnie, who has recently been released from jail. The Native American has been re-arrested; after all he is the prime suspect, a husband with a violent past; but what husband would mutilate his bride in this fashion and burn her body? The facts just don’t add to Manny.

The investigation leads to a town on the rez, Ajo, Arizona where the line of questioning discovers possible reprisals from the cartels over drug and gun smuggling, not a family argument gone awry, and Manny finds himself in a shootout that leaves Lois’s sister, Evelyn, dead and Donnie critically wounded.

Highway 85, the ‘Devil’s Highway’ that Luis Urrea introduced too in his great book of that title, is a dangerous drug corridor where death awaits smugglers, and money changes hands for the control of the rampant evil between the cartels and those hired to enforce the laws. Guns and drugs cross the border for a profit and sometimes private citizens get caught in the crossfire, or become part of the set-up, like it or not.

Buckle up if you want to survive as Lohr takes us along on this bumpy ride down the Devil’s Highway in this intelligent and fast-paced race into hell and back.
Very entertaining
Know the local author and liked his first book - this one is even better! You'll be hooked on Manny Aguilar!
I didn't know where it was going until the end.
I loved Lohr's first novel and waited eagerly for this one. Worth the wait. It's a quieter story without the rip-snorter violence and mayhem of the first, but satisfying nonetheless. The characters lead the story, and the reader's with Manny on his long haul drives all over Arizona piecing together what happened. You can almost smell the dust of the desert and see those big, night, starry skies the writing is so fine. A good read. Try it.
Author Lohr's work continues to shine a light on the stupidity and violence of the "war on drugs" as acted out in the deserts of the American southwest. The protagonist Manny, a private detective with a shady past and a passingly strange girlfriend, is caught up again in the war while investigating the murder of a young Native American woman. But this time, as in real life, the end result is that there are no winners, not even Manny. Lohr has written a gripping, timely novel that exposes the hypocrisy and sheer foolishness of the so-called "war on drugs," a war we are all losing.
For readers who like the books of John Sanford, Lee Child, James Patterson and others writers of murder mysteries, this series will be a good find for them.
