The Spectre and the Governess The Faire Curiosities eBook Caitlin E Jones Reviews

The Spectre and the Governess is enchanting with its introduction to a world of magic set in Victorian England, while also haunting with the events that unfold. Caitlin E Jones does an exceptional job at conveying an eerie, unsettling tone one would hope for with hauntings while also maintaining a sense of charm through her memorable characters and dialogue. From the moment I first began to read it I was absorbed until the very end and can't recommend it enough.
This haunting and beautiful gem will capture your imagination as fully as it captures an age of innocence, charm, and mystery. Jones' prose is subtle and textured, her characters nuanced and engaging. If this short novella feels unfinished, it is because it is the precursor to the novel Chimehour, which will hopefully be released on in the very near future. I hope you will take the time to explore the world created by this promising young writer. You will not be disappointed.
It's not easy to write a story that believably takes place in the late 19th century without sounding like an anachronism sure, you can add period details or dated speech, but it usually sounds like 21st century people walking around a museum--and knocking things over in the process. This story works so beautifully because Caitlin Jones has so thoroughly read and digested the period that she can inhabit it in her writing. Small details such as a turn of speech, the description of furniture, or the subtle class dynamics among master and servants are all lovingly preserved, and place us magically in this forgotten time. Her stories always seem to hover between that space between historical fiction and fairy tale, with the story gently bobbing back and forth between them. In this she most resembles Neil Gaiman of modern writers, since she writes beautifully yet tellingly of the past; yet she also conjures up Oscar Wilde, particularly his humorous tale The Canterville Ghost, since she never takes her work too seriously.

The story concerns a boy with second sight, able to see the invisible spirit world that hovers around us--much to the consternation of his parents. They hire a governess to keep him in check, but meanwhile, he's learning about the secrets of the house, which only the long-lived butler can verify. His immortal line, when quizzed about the servants who have died in the house, sums up much of the story "death is a trying subject." Meaning in this case that the living concoct so much nonsense about the veil that separates the living from the dead, so how can a true seer (or someone who is simply closer to death than the rest of us) begin to explain it? Of course, the young master is beginning to understand the true nature of death, and what keeps the dead attached to the world of the living--still performing their age-old duties when they are no longer required.

It's a poetic, slightly spooky story, more atmosphere than visceral thrill as it should be. It seems like part of the old tradition of Gothic horror, standing nobly beside Sheridan le Fanu, Lord Dunsany, and the ghost stories of Henry James. Reading this story is like going back in time in the most elegant fashion you never seem disorientated, but the sights, smells, and sensations of the fin di siecle are all around you. Like a luxurious ancient armchair, you sink in and never want to get up. It's thoroughly enjoyable and evocative writing.
As expected. It immediatly drew me in and kept me engaged. An excellent story that left me craving more from the author. I eagerly await the next novel.
Caitlin E Jones spins an entertaining tale that never fails to be suspenseful, fun, and touching. A gothic ghost story with a modern voice and a classic flair.
For such a short piece, all the characters are wonderfully fleshed out. The atmosphere draws you in, equal parts eerie and beautiful. You're left with the melancholy contentedness of the specter and the well deserved happiness of the sweet boy Stanley.
The Spectre and the Governess pulls you in from the moment you read about Stanley and his peculiar gifts. A tale full of upper class gossip and secrets, this is a book you can’t put
